Znowtza and Znow

De ASOARE

Znow came every year on December 1st. He was a handsome 20-year-old with hair as white as snow and a strong, commanding presence. Swift as frost and full of energy, Znow was known for bringing the best news and the most delicious ice cream, called 'snowballs' or 'Znow's snowballs.' The snowballs were placed in an elegant candy box, with 'Znow's Snowballs' written in silver letters. Inside, the ice cream was white, with a fine vanilla cream, sprinkled with coconut flakes – a special recipe known only to Znow
He would place this little ice cream box in the boots left by the door, and alongside it, he would leave a flower – a Christmas rose. Whoever received this flower knew that, in that year, they would find their chosen one.

Though Znow brought joy to others and foretold their destinies, he had
yet to find his own chosen one. His greatest wish was to meet a girl
who, like him, was born with snow-white hair. And that girl existed. Her
name was Znowtza.

Znowtza lived with her father and her stepfamily: Faira, her stepsister,
and her stepmother. Although they all lived under the same roof, the
two girls couldn’t have been more different.
Znowtza was a delicate girl with a pale complexion as white as milk,
hair as white as fresh snow, and warm brown eyes, like those of a
deer. Her long, white, and radiant hair was tied in two delicate braids,
fastened with snowflake-shaped clips, framing her gentle face. The
rest of her hair fell freely down her back, shimmering like fresh snow,
giving the impression of pure and endless beauty. Faira, on the other
hand, had dark skin, and her hair was as black as a raven’s feather.
Faira couldn’t stand Znowtza, especially because of her sister’s white
hair. It was so beautiful and special that Faira longed to have hair like
hers, white as snow, but she knew this was impossible. This desire
made Faira more and more envious of her stepsister.
Although Znowtza longed for a peaceful life, far from conflicts, Faira
was always tense and irritable. She spoke quickly and would flare up
over nothing, much like the fire that seemed to mirror her very name.
Faira’s jealousy towards her sister clouded her temperament and
made her aggressive, always looking for reasons to argue.
Znowtza was at home with her parents. Faira's mother was preparing
the bed for the night, while Znowtza had just finished polishing the
shoes – hers, her parents', and even her stepsister's. Faira, as usual,
hadn’t done anything because she was too lazy, but Znowtza neatly
placed all the shoes by the door, eagerly waiting for Znow's arrival.

Faira's mother called from the room: – Fairy, tell Znowtza to take out
the trash, Znow is coming, and everything needs to be clean, okay,
sweetheart?
Faira (raised her voice, not really meaning it): Yeah, mom, I'll tell her!
(She turned to Znowtza and shouted in a sharp tone): Hey, girl! Go
take out the trash, that's what mom said!
Znowtza,(holding Faira's shoes in her hands, calmly replied): Don't
you want to do it yourself?
Faira (frowned, ready to explode): Hey, don't talk to me like that,
you're already making me mad! Why are you acting like you're better
than me? You want me to come and mess up your hair?
Znowtza (sighed and answered gently): Girl, calm down, you always
get angry for no reason. Can't you see I’m busy with your boots? I’m
polishing them! Your boots, which are full of...
Faira (cut her off, making a grimace): – Filth! Go take out the trash, it
stinks like filth!
Znowtza (raised an eyebrow, amused): – I was going to say mud,
but... alright, if you say filth.
Faira (snapped): Gosh, you’re really making me mad! Go take that
trash out, you lazy, good-for-nothing!
Faira's Mother (poked her head out of the room): Znowtza, honey, did
you take out the trash?

Znowtza (answered kindly): Yes, mom, of course I’ll take it out. I’m
just putting something on first.
Faira (started again): Yeah, sure, I’ll go, how could I not... You're so
fake, like a spoiled cat! So much disrespect! You really make me mad
when you act like this!
Znowtza didn’t say anything more. She often let Faira talk to herself.
Faira was one year younger, and Znowtza loved her, despite her
behavior.
Without replying, Znowtza carefully placed the boots by the door, then
went to the kitchen to take out the trash. As she was about to leave
the house, she turned off the light in the hallway.
Faira shouted when she saw Znowtza turn off the light:
Faira: Don’t turn off the light, you’ll scare me! I’ll see you all white, like
a Christmas ghost! Do you want mom to faint when she sees you?
Znowtza laughed, not backing down:
– Relax, because in the dark, you only look like a smiley. All teeth!
Faira, feeling insulted, quickly approached Znowtza and grabbed her
hair:
Faira: Hey, don’t call me all toothy! Did you hear that? Wham! Right
on the head!
In an instant, the two girls started pulling each other’s hair, shoving
and yelling at each other:

Znowtza (protested): Go take out the trash yourself, I don’t feel like it!
And let go of my hair!
Faira (screamed back): Are you calling me toothy again? You first let
go of my hair!
Znowtza (tried to defend herself):I only called you a smiley! But you?
You called me a Christmas ghost!
Faira (exploded): If I catch you calling me toothy again... I don’t know
what I’ll do to you! I’ll break those ghost teeth you don’t even have!
Znowtza’s Father (entered the room when he heard the noise): My
girls, calm down! Enough, that’s it! What’s going on with you? Znow is
supposed to show up soon, and you’re fighting? Have you lost your
minds? Come on, time for bed! Time to work ! Someone take out the
trash!
Faira (stopped pulling Znowtza’s hair and raised her eyebrows,
confused):– What’s wrong with dad, has he lost his mind? Bedtime,
work time? I don’t understand anything anymore!
Znowtza’s Father (looked at her with a mix of surprise and
exhaustion):Faira, what do you want to do, sweetheart?
Faira (shrugged and rolled her eyes): Work, sleep, teeth, ghosts... I
don’t know either, dad.
Znowtza’s Father (shook his head and gently slapped his forehead):
My girl, you’ve all driven me crazy! Decide already! Do you want to

sleep? Are you sick? Why are you pulling each other’s hair? Get to
work, go on, get to work!
Znowtza (started laughing, barely able to speak): Daddy, go
peacefully to bed and stay calm. Celebrate Znow as you should, but
do it while resting! I’m going to take out the trash. It’s better this way,
without shouting and pulling hair around here.
Faira (immediately retorted, frowning): Yeah, go ahead, hurry up,
because you’re already annoying me!
Znowtza (put on her coat and took the trash): Yes, girl, I’m going.
Calm down.
Faira (watched her leave and said spitefully):Go on, leave... you brat!
Znow traveled in his sleigh, drawn by white horses with shimmering
snow wings. The horses raced swiftly through a new town, leaving
behind a trail of snowflakes dancing in the moonlight. Suddenly, his
gaze landed on a girl with hair as white as snow. For a moment, Znow
almost mistook her for a snowflake.
His heart stopped for a second. It was the first time he had seen
someone with hair as white as his. He knew, without a shadow of a
doubt, that she was the one his heart had been waiting for.
Mesmerized by the girl's beauty, Znow made the first snowflakes fall
around her. He watched as she danced happily among the
snowflakes, like a single flake among many others. He couldn't take
his eyes off her, but he had to continue his mission.

To distract her and have time to enter the house, Znow made the
snow fall even heavier. Large, fluffy flakes caught her attention, and
she, laughing, continued playing with the snow.
Znow quickly entered the house and came across the neatly polished
and aligned boots. But he stopped, confused: all the boots looked the
same! He no longer knew which one belonged to the girl with white
hair. After a few moments of thought, he smiled and made a decision.
In each boot, he would place Znow's ice cream – snowballs, a
Christmas rose, and a note that read:
“I believe you are my chosen one. If you want to know if you are my
chosen one, come on the first Saturday with the carol ‘Znow’ to the ice
house in the forest across the valley. Come and find out the answer.”
After finishing his task, Znow quickly left the house, leaving behind a
delicate coconut scent.
Soon after, Znowtza entered the house. She carefully closed the door
and immediately sensed the sweet coconut fragrance floating in the
air. Her gaze fell on their little boots, where she saw a Christmas rose
placed in each pair.
Faira (entered the hallway, her eyes sparkling with curiosity and
excitement.): Yesss, girl, do you feel what I feel? (she asked eagerly.)
Znowtza, (surprised, lifted her gaze from the boots): What do you
mean?
Faira: (exclaimed) : The smell of Znow! It smells like coconut, girl, he
was here! Oh, I can't believe it! Did you get to see him?

Znowtza (shook her head, a little disappointed but smiling): No... I
went to take out the trash. But I can't believe he was here!
Without wasting another moment, the two girls took each other's
hands and began jumping with joy, completely forgetting about their
earlier argument. Their boots gleamed beautifully, aligned at the door,
and the gifts from Znow were a real surprise.
Faira: Wow, it seems like this year I'll find my true love! (said excitedly,
lifting the Christmas rose from her boot.)
Znowtza (radiating joy, immediately agreed.): Yes, me too! And you!
Both of us!
In that moment, they forgot about their jealousy and began to laugh
and jump again, smelling the Christmas rose they had received and
eagerly waiting to taste Znow's ice cream, in the form of snowballs.
They both opened the little notes they had received and began to
read, curious to discover the message left by Znow
Faira (extremely happy with what she saw written on her note): So,
what does yours say, dear? Do you know what mine says?
Znowtza (looking at her curiously): What? Come on... tell me what it
says!
Faira (playfully): You go first, and then I'll tell you... you're going to die,
haha!
Znowtza (laughing lightly): Okay, are you ready?

Faira (full of excitement): I think you will die when I tell you what it
says here!
Znowtza (raising her note, smiling): Are you sure you want me to read
it?
Faira (Impatient): Yes, girl, go ahead, I'm curious!
Znowtza (reads clearly): Okay, it says: 'I believe you are the one for
me. If you want to find out if you are the one for me, come on the first
Saturday with the carol “Znow” to the ice house in the forest across
the valley, and come find out if you are the one for me.'
Faira (freezes, mouth slightly open when she hears it, because she
had received exactly the same answer): Nooooo...
Znowtza (amused, immediately replies): Yes, yes...
Faira (grabbing the paper from Znowtza's hand and reading with her
own eyes): No way! (She snatches the paper to confirm it says the
same thing.): This can’t be! I’m Znow’s chosen one, not you. I got the
same thing as you. I’m the one for him, period! (She throws the letter
she had received back at Znowtza)
Znowtza (With a sad smile): It must be a mistake, it's an error!
Faira (with a look of contempt): Of course it's a mistake! For me, it’s
the rose and the letter! You are the mistake of this world, you were
born with white hair, you are a mistake! I’m going to Znow this
Saturday, and he will choose me! You’ll see!

Znowtza (confident and calm): No! I say we’ll see who Znow chooses!
